- qualified review approval is required
- reviewer identity, qualification, evidence, and approval date are required
What this course establishes
- Research, thumbnail and construct an illustration whose composition, perspective, value, color and visual language answer a documented communication problem
- Produce controlled raster and vector artwork with non-destructive layers, reproducible color, appropriate resolution and verified exports
- Deliver narrative, editorial or explanatory illustration with traceable rights, factual boundaries, accessible equivalents, critique evidence and versioned masters
Entry knowledge
- Basic drawing or visual-observation practice
- Basic raster or vector tool familiarity
- Ability to organize files and document sources
Scope boundaries
- Uses fictional briefs and assets only; it does not authorize copying protected expression, misleading photomanipulation, culturally extractive imagery, real personal data, unreviewed medical/scientific claims, unsafe studio materials or publication without accountable review
- Does not replace an art director, editor, subject-matter expert, scientist, clinician, sensitivity reader, accessibility specialist, print technician, rights-clearance professional or legal counsel
Fastest competency route
Completion is self-paced and competency-based. Prior skill shortens study only when every research, drawing, production, rights, factual, accessibility, critique and delivery criterion is demonstrated; no fixed duration, employment, certification, publication, legal clearance, scientific accuracy, accessibility conformance, client acceptance or commercial result is promised.
- Pass diagnostics in research, reference ethics, shape, gesture, perspective, value, color, raster/vector craft, narrative sequencing, factual integrity, rights, accessibility and delivery
- Complete the synthetic commission audit and one three-format illustration system
- Correct every brief, reference, anatomy, perspective, value, color, crop, rights, provenance, factual, alternative-description, layer, profile, resolution, export and version defect
Full self-paced route
- Briefs, reference, drawing systems and visual structure
- Raster/vector craft, color, iteration and production
- Narrative, editorial and explanatory integrity, rights, accessibility and delivery

Required applied assignment
Research-to-delivery illustration commission portfolio
Using only the fictional commission audit, create an original illustration system consisting of one hero image, one responsive crop and one three-panel editorial or explanatory sequence. Demonstrate researched construction, controlled production, factual and ethical boundaries, rights, accessibility, critique and traceable delivery. Do not copy protected expression, use real personal data or unlicensed assets, alter research evidence deceptively, make unreviewed regulated claims or claim legal clearance, scientific accuracy, accessibility conformance, client acceptance or publication.
- Brief, research question, reference/rights ledger, thumbnails, value/color studies, perspective/form construction and crop/continuity plans
- Layered raster and/or vector masters, color script, output matrix, effective-resolution/profile checks, verified derivatives and source-to-export comparison
- Fact/uncertainty and transformation log, subject/cultural review plan, short/long alternatives and non-color information treatment
- Structured critique and revision, approval record, rights/accessibility ledgers, manifest, checksums, export recipe, version history and open risks
Passing standard: 85 of 100 points, with substantive revision required.
