Current availability

The subject-specific curriculum is authored but not yet published for completion. Learners may inspect its scope and learning design now. Start, grading, and completion remain unavailable until every listed gate passes.

  • qualified review approval is required
  • reviewer identity, qualification, evidence, and approval date are required

What this course establishes

  • Translate a fictional drawing and work order into revision-controlled features, tolerances, material and process evidence
  • Plan fictional turning, milling, drilling, grinding and CNC workflows with workholding, tooling, offsets, verification and safety hold points
  • Audit fictional measurements, nonconformances, maintenance, handoff and quality data using traceable records without operating equipment

Entry knowledge

  • Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, units, scientific notation and careful reading of drawings and specifications
  • Ability to distinguish nominal dimension, limit, tolerance, datum, feature, process step, measurement result and acceptance decision
  • Commitment to guarding, energy control, eye/hearing/skin protection, accessible communication and stop-work authority

Scope boundaries

  • All drawings, parts, programs, machines, tools, materials, people and records are fictional. Learners must not start, jog, home, set up, load, operate, reach into, troubleshoot or maintain a machine; handle stock, sharp chips, coolant or compressed air; mount workholding or tools; set offsets; execute G-code; grind; deburr; lift; or perform lockout/tagout through this course.
  • This is not apprenticeship credit, supervised experience, journey status, employer machine authorization, CNC programmer qualification, rigging or forklift authorization, OSHA authorized-employee status, NIMS or other credential, college credit, inspection delegation or professional certification.
  • Only current controlled drawings/specifications, manufacturer instructions, employer procedures, qualified supervision and applicable law govern real work. Internal completion or a fastest route never predicts safe machine performance, credential attainment, conforming parts or employment.

Fastest competency route

Completion is self-paced and competency-based. Prior knowledge may shorten conceptual study only when revision, material, datum, process, risk and measurement evidence remain traceable. Hands-on proficiency, supervised hours and machine authorization require external programs; no fastest-hour, credential or employment promise is made.

  1. Pass diagnostics on drawings, tolerances, materials, process planning, workholding, cutting, CNC, metrology, safety and quality
  2. Repair every planted defect in the fictional machining audit
  3. Complete and defend the machining process-and-quality dossier

Full self-paced route

  1. Drawing, revision, material, tolerance and process planning
  2. Machines, cutting mechanics, workholding, tools, CNC and safety
  3. Metrology, process control, nonconformance, maintenance and quality
  4. Applied machining process-and-quality dossier

Lesson and assessment map

01

Drawings, tolerances, materials, and process planning

Convert a fictional controlled drawing into an unambiguous feature, material and process plan.

4 questions: recall, application, judgment, and error correction.

02

Cutting mechanics, workholding, CNC literacy, and machine safety

Plan a fictional machining setup and CNC verification path without operating a machine.

4 questions: recall, application, judgment, and error correction.

03

Metrology, process control, nonconformance, maintenance, and quality

Make defensible fictional measurement and disposition decisions with traceable quality records.

4 questions: recall, application, judgment, and error correction.

Required applied assignment

Machining process-and-quality dossier

Repair the fictional machining audit and create one paper-only dossier from controlled requirements through process plan, workholding, cutting, CNC state, safety, metrology, nonconformance, maintenance and quality. Perform no machine setup, operation, offset entry, program execution, material handling, measurement on live equipment or energy-control work.

  • Revision, feature, tolerance, datum, material and change-control matrix
  • Operation sequence, workholding, tooling, cutting-variable and CNC-state verification plan
  • Guarding, energy, chemical/coolant, chip, lifting and stop-work boundaries
  • Measurement-system, first-piece, process-control and nonconformance records
  • Maintenance handoff and quality dashboard with duplicate repair, denominators, missingness and balancing measures

Passing standard: 80 of 100 points, with substantive revision required.

Continue after this course

  • Verify registered-apprenticeship, employer qualification, machine, inspection, material and customer requirements for the intended workplace
  • Complete supervised labs and field hours on the exact manual/CNC machines, controls, tooling, workholding, materials and measurement systems
  • Maintain demonstrated safety, setup, programming, metrology, quality, maintenance and continuing-competence records
