Current availability

The subject-specific curriculum is authored but not yet published for completion. Learners may inspect its scope and learning design now. Start, grading, and completion remain unavailable until every listed gate passes.

  • qualified review approval is required
  • reviewer identity, qualification, evidence, and approval date are required

What this course establishes

  • Apply silica-aware studio housekeeping
  • Construct and document a stable introductory hand-built form
  • Prepare a traceable surface and firing submission without operating a kiln

Entry knowledge

  • Follow written studio rules and stop when material identity or authorization is unclear

Scope boundaries

  • No independent kiln, glaze-formulation, spray-application, grinding, or production-studio authorization

Fastest competency route

Clay drying and supervised studio access impose real elapsed-time limits; no accelerated route may bypass material-state or safety requirements.

  1. Pass all safety-critical diagnostic items
  2. Complete the documented hand-built form under an approved studio procedure
  3. Pass structural/material review and correct every unsafe action

Full self-paced route

  1. Studio-safety lesson and inspection
  2. Hand-building lesson and staged practice
  3. Surface/firing-boundaries lesson
  4. Hand-built project, feedback, revision, and final assessment

Lesson and assessment map

01

Read the clay studio before making

Identify clay states, material information, exposure routes, and housekeeping choices before beginning studio work.

4 questions: recall, application, judgment, and error correction.

02

Build a stable form by controlling moisture and joints

Construct and document a small pinch or coil form with even walls, compressed surfaces, supported joints, and controlled drying.

4 questions: recall, application, judgment, and error correction.

03

Plan surfaces and respect firing boundaries

Create a traceable surface/firing plan while leaving glaze formulation, loading, firing, and unloading to authorized trained operators.

4 questions: recall, application, judgment, and error correction.

Required applied assignment

Documented hand-built form and studio-safety file

Create or simulate a small pinch/coil form through the pre-firing stage and submit evidence of structural decisions, dust controls, material traceability, and authorization boundaries. No independent kiln operation is permitted.

  • Pre-work studio safety inspection
  • Four-stage build record with dimensions
  • Joint and moisture-control explanation
  • Wet/HEPA housekeeping checklist
  • Material label/SDS and firing submission card
  • Defect analysis and revision memo

Passing standard: 80 of 100 points, with substantive revision required.
